Native to the tropical region of the Americas and the only
species of the family Bixaceae, Bixa Orellana is a shrub or small tree reaching
to 6-20 feet in height, age about 50 years and has pink, white or a pinkish-white
flowers. Flowering occurs in October-December.

It is mainly grown as an
ornamental tree and the seeds produces orange-yellow pigments carotenoid,
called bixin and norbixin. The seed also called "poor man's saffron"
as it makes a good alternative for much expensive spice saffron. Widely used in
food, cosmetic, textile and soap industries. Uses varies like a food colorant,
a textile dye, an insect repellent, as a sunscreen and against insect bites.
